That is, we d like a construct that is fast and non-blocking (like the user-mode constructs) when there is no contention But when there is contention for the construct, we d like it to be blocked by the operating system kernel Constructs that work like this do exist; I call them hybrid constructs, and I will discuss them in 29 It is very common for applications to use the hybrid constructs because in most applications, it is rare for two or more threads to attempt to access the same data at the same time A hybrid construct keeps your application running fast most of the time, and occasionally it runs slowly to block the thread The slowness usually doesn t matter at this point because your thread is going to be blocked anyway ..

You can ignore the Continue group in the lower right-hand corner. It's only important when you want different handling on breakpoint, single step, and invalid handle exceptions. If you add your own structured exception handling (SEH) errors to the list, leave the Continue option at the default, Not Handled. That way any time the exception comes through WinDBG, WinDBG will properly pass the exception directly back to the debuggee. You don't want the debugger eating exceptions other than those it caused, such as a breakpoint or a single step. After selecting a particular exception, the most important button on the dialog box is the Commands button. The name alone should give you a hint about what it does. Clicking on the Commands button brings up the Filter Command dialog box shown in Figure 8-6. The first edit control is misnamed and should be labeled First-Chance Exception.

The C# using statement is the equivalent of the Java import statement, and it makes members of the specified namespace available for use without requiring a fully qualified name. When a namespace is imported, all of the members in that namespace are made available; unlike the Java import statement, using does not allow the programmer to specify an individual member to be imported. If two imported namespaces contain members with the same name, the fully qualified names are used to differentiate between the members. C# also provides a mechanism for defining an alias that can be used to represent the namespace portion of the fully qualified member name. However, if an alias is declared for a namespace, members of the namespace cannot be accessed directly using their name and must always be prefixed with the alias. The using statement operates at the namespace level; different namespaces in the same source file can import unique sets of namespaces. Each namespace is free to assign any aliases to the namespaces it imports, irrespective of those declared by other namespaces. An example of namespace usage follows:

The ability to retrieve the last SQL statement from the SQL buffer is often very useful when you need to correct errors and re-execute the SQL statement. You will see how to do this in the subsequent sections, where we ll also discuss some other SQL*Plus commands related to the SQL buffer. If you enter a second SQL command, the SQL buffer is overwritten, and you lose the previous SQL command. In the Saving Commands section later in this chapter, you will see an easy method to save SQL commands for reuse in SQL*Plus. Note from the example in Listing 2-3 that the SQL command returned from the SQL buffer did not include a semicolon at the end of it. The semicolon is not part of the SQL command itself, and it does not end up in the SQL buffer. If you enter a SQL command (or even a portion of a SQL command) and press the Enter key twice, without first adding a semicolon, the command will not be executed, but it will be saved in the SQL buffer. The SQL*Plus commands you enter are not stored in the SQL buffer. You can run as many SQL*Plus commands as you like, but another SQL*Plus LIST command will display the same SQL command. From the example in Listing 2-3, you can also note several other things about SQL*Plus commands: They are normally executed on a single line, unlike most SQL commands. You don t need to enter a semicolon to execute SQL*Plus commands. They execute immediately when you press the Enter key. SQL*Plus commands can be abbreviated (L stands for LIST), whereas SQL commands cannot.
